The French while lacking in production and use of hand grenades, were not lacking in the point of creativity. They used an assortment of different containers like sardine, beef, and other food cans. They would then fill them with rocks, shrapnel, some explosive like gunpowder, and a wick fuse pushed in the top.

The British had a similar problem and solution, but more commonly used jam pots instead of food cans.
